Why I Speak at Dental Conferences (And What I Wish More Speakers Would Say)

PJ

Pete Johnson

I've been speaking at dental conferences for over eight years now. Rocky Mountain Dental Conference. The International Dental Implant Symposium. AADOM. Benco's Build Your Future. Smile Source Exchange. Smiles at Sea. The list keeps growing.

And every time someone asks me why I keep doing it, the answer is the same: because dentists deserve better information than what they're getting.

The Problem With Most Dental Conference Talks

Here's what I see at a lot of dental marketing sessions: a speaker gets on stage, shows some slides about "the power of social media" or "why you need a website," and walks off. The audience claps politely. Nobody's life changes.

That's not a presentation. That's a TED Talk from 2014.

The dental industry is evolving fast — AI is reshaping marketing, Google's algorithm changes quarterly, and your competition down the street just hired their third marketing agency. Practice owners don't need generic advice. They need someone who's actually in the trenches showing them what's working right now.

What I Bring to the Stage

Every talk I give is built on real data. Not hypothetical scenarios. Not "best practices" pulled from a blog post. Real numbers from real practices.

Here's why that matters:

  • I've helped analyze 1,500+ dental practices. I've seen what works and what doesn't across every market size, every specialty, and every budget level.
  • I build the tools we use. At Lasso MD, I don't just sell marketing — I build AI-powered competitive analysis tools that pull live data on any practice in the country. When I show you a competitive teardown on stage, it's the same tool I use on real discovery calls.
  • I show the ugly truth too. Most speakers only show success stories. I'll show you why practices fail at marketing — and it's usually not the marketing's fault.

The Talks That Get People Talking

My most requested topics right now:

AI-Powered Dental Marketing — How AI tools are transforming practice marketing, from automated competitive analysis to predictive patient acquisition. This isn't theoretical — I demo live tools on stage. (I wrote a deep-dive on this: How AI Is Changing Dental Marketing in 2026) The Data-Driven Practice — Why gut-feel marketing is dead and how to use actual SEO data, competitive intelligence, and local search analytics to make smarter decisions about where to invest. Winning Local Search — A tactical deep-dive into Google Business Profile optimization, citation management, and the specific local SEO strategies that move the needle for dental practices. Building a Marketing System That Scales — How to stop chasing tactics and build a repeatable marketing engine — whether you're a solo practitioner or expanding to multiple locations.

What I Wish More Speakers Would Do

Be honest.

The dental conference circuit has too many speakers who are really just doing a 45-minute sales pitch for their product or service. I get it — everyone's got a business to run. But when a practice owner takes time away from patients and pays conference fees to learn something, they deserve actual value.

When I'm on stage, my goal is simple: give you something you can take back to your practice and implement on Monday morning. If that means showing you how to do something yourself — even if it means you don't hire my company — so be it.

The practices that eventually do work with us? They do it because they trust us. And that trust starts on stage.
